I have things to say and this is where I'll say them.

Gone Between

I was very sad to learn that my favorite author, Anne McCaffrey, passed away on November 21, 2011.  She’s the writer of my all-time favorite story, the Dragonriders of Pern.  She was 85 years old and had been ill for some time.  It was a stroke that at last sent her between.

I will always love to visit Pern each time I re-read one of her books.  The sad part is that she was never able to write the final story.  There was one more piece to add to the amazing journey, and now it will forever be un-spoken.

I was privileged to correspond with Ms. McCaffrey at one time.  She was a lovely lady and a brilliant author.  She will be greatly missed.

  1. I truly echo your sentiments. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve re-read the Pern series and the number of daydreams that I’ve had about what it would be like to impress a dragon.

Such a shame that she didn’t achieve her ambition to write that final story but how generous she was to pass the baton along to her son, Todd. I imagine that he has her notes and that she will guide his hand if he ever decides to write it for her… or at least I hope so.

    She’ll be sorely missed.

    • Hi Lynn. Thanks for stopping by.

I once read that while Todd has mostly taken over the Pern series for his mother, he wasn’t allowed to write any of her stories or characters. He had to come up with his own. Todd is currently writing books that take place at the beginning of the 3rd Pass, while the main story written by his mother takes place in the 9th Pass. From what I understood, it was part of his contract. Now that his mother is gone, maybe that will change, but maybe it won’t.
